Is anyone else getting tired of social media?

Or is it just me?

I’m not quite sure what it is… I just find myself getting tired of certain aspects of the ‘wide world of social media/marketing/networking’ (whatever you like to call it).

I’m tired of getting random invites to stuff that I don’t really care about.

I’m tired of reading boring tweets about what someone ate for lunch.

I’m tired of trying to think of something to tweet about other than what I ate for lunch.

I’m tired of feeling like I *should* be doing more with my social media efforts when it comes to business building activites…. but I don’t want to go overboard and become all promo-ey.

I remember signing up for my Facebook account a couple of years ago, at which time it was all about personal relationships – connecting with old high school friends and such. It was fun to catch up with folks, see what they were up to, etc. Simple stuff.

Then the buzz became all about ‘using social media to build your business’ and it became a very different landscape. Alongside my friends I was now starting to connect with business contacts/colleagues online (which I am picky about as per my facebook friending rule)… this brought a different feel to the whole thing. Having to think twice about what to post, what to share, etc.

If I post something about my business will it turn off my friends? (most of whom could care less about what I do). If I post personal stuff is that a ‘too much information’ scenario for my biz connections? (who probably don’t want to see pictures of my kids).

Gets confusing at times… hence my tiredness.

That being said, tomorrow I will probably get over it and tweet my head off, LOL.

You? Are you loving the social media or getting tired of it as well?

Thank you Tina for sharing this. I thought I was the only one who felt this way.

I understand the appeal to the business world around Linked In – because, well, its all business. But FaceBook and Twitter make my head hurt!

Tina,

You are not alone. I often wonder what kind of lives some of these social networking people have that they can send me 5 or 6 tweets a day, plus let me know that they have updated their facebook page and their blog.

The sheer volume of stuff that some people post, makes it a total turn off for me. It just doesn’t ring true or feel natural, it’s all about selling, not building relationships.

I agree with Kristi that LinkedIn, has a more business like feel, but I am starting to notice a lot more blatant selling and less actual networking.

Maybe I’m just too old for all this new fangled stuff, I enjoy talking to people face to face or at least on the phone.

Yes and no. Facebook – I have two accounts, one for personal stuff and one for business. The business account is updated automatically when I update my blog, but otherwise I haven’t touched it in months. Except to remove ‘friends’ who keeps sending me invites to stuff I’m not interested in.

The personal account I love and use all the time – for personal topics. My family keep up with each other on Facebook, I keep up with friends, see photo’s of people. Love it.

Twitter I use a lot for both business and some personal. I use it to promote business, and I also use it to build relationships and meet people. I’ve made friends who I now know irl from twitter. I’ve had questions answered, helped people with thier own questions.

I also have a LinkedIn account, which I don’t use and should. Plaxo which I don’t use and need to delete. A Biznik account that is on my ‘I need to look into this’ list.

For me, I’m likely to delete my business facebook account and keep twittering. As for the others, we’ll see how they go. :-)

I’m determined to have the best year financially of my life, all while not using any social media. I have a collegue who twitters and facebooks, etc and hasn’t gotten one thing from it as far as bankable results go.

Meanwhile, I’m hiring help as I’m having trouble keeping up w/biz.

I’m sure there is some worthwhile aspects, but everyone has promoted it so much I’m completely turned off by all of it.
I won’t blog. I won’t twitter or facebook and I don’t have an ounce of regret about any of it.

Interestingly enough a huge part of my business comes from online. So you’d think I would embrace it more.

I’m glad someone wrote what I’ve been thinking for some time now. I really don’t think even my closest friends and family care about every little move I make. If you work (including volunteering) and have a family, there’s not much free time left. I’m also mindful of “privacy.” Not that I’m someone famous but I really don’t want my life all out there. I say go for quality rather than quantity.
